1 Page Proposal
1. Problem
- Do you know that electricity waste is a phenomenon in our daily lives? The main problem is we don’t even realize that ”how the energy might be wasted?”
- For the general public without any knowledge of electricity, they usually take ”ethical” ways to save energy, like minimizing the use of air conditioning in extreme temperature days.
- For the others might concern about energy efficiency, they prefer "renewal" ways, like changing the inefficient equipment. But how do we tell which is better?
2. Proposed Solution
- Invent/Design a process to engage people to evaluate energy usage in their daily lives, and provide tailored-solution options, making energy-saving decisions easier.
- The Department of Geography at my home university has a good example. Since there are metal rooftop add-ons, heated by sunshine so quickly, they have to cool down by air conditioning causing energy peak loads on sunny days. The possible solution for them is to add Photovoltaics panels or airspace to their rooftops instead of renewing the air conditioners.
- The entire building energy assessment should contain three phases: architectural modeling, data analyzing, and scope interviewing. Nevertheless, the project goal of energy detective is trying to inspire/engage people’s awareness of energy waste in their daily lives. As a result, the entire energy evaluation will be carried out behind the engagement.
